Pregnancy & PD [1-31-05]

Does anyone have any experience with pregnancy and PD? I am the mother of twin girls - they will be 4 in March. I am 35 years old and was dx'd in Novemeber of 2003; my symptoms are still mild. My husband and I had our girls via in-vitro fertilization, and we have three embryo's frozen "waiting" for us...we had always intended to try for one more child. PD changed all that, we think. Now it's time to decide. The clinic where the embryo's are frozen has called and said it's time to pay a hefty fee to keep the babies frozen for up to another 6 years, or to do "something else" with them.

I can't find any information on the web regarding PD and pregnancy, so anything would be helpful. This weighs heavy on my heart.

I'm on Mirapex and Amantadine as well as CoQ10, vitamin C and Vitamin E. I see my MDS later this week, so I'll check with him too....just looking for answers from someone who might have been there too.

Thank you!

Tracy

Hi Tracy
Wow, I'm Jess, I am 28 and I was dx'd in oct 04 but I 've had symptoms for three yrs and when I was pregnant my symptoms got worse but I wasn't on any medication.
My dx at that time was dystonia. My son is 15months. I nursed for 10 months and at that point I was so shakey I need a second opinion. So thats when I found out I have pd.  So I am feeling the same way, Do we even go down the road of pregnancy. Without meds there is no way I could work right now I have to work. With meds what if the ones they say are safe for the baby don't work. I totally want another baby but I don't want to hurt the baby with meds and I don't want too feel like I felt in august.  you have a tough decision, I know I'm not very much help. but I have been looking for info on pregnancy and pd and I have not found much at all. So if one of us hears any thing let keep in touch. I am so glad you mentioned this. talk to you later.
Jessica

DONT LET ME BRING YOU DOWN. IM JUST GOING BY WHAT DR. TOLD ME. MIRAPEX IS A SCHEDULE C DRUG. WHICH MEANS CAN CAUSE DEFORMITIES & OTHER PROBLEMS. THE WORST IS SCHEDULE D WHICH MEANS THERES NO CHANCE FOR THE PREGNANCY. ON THE MIRAPEX LABEL IT SAYS IT HAS ONLY BEEN TESTED IN ANIMALS DURING PREGNANCY & MOST TIMES THE FETUS IS REABSORDED BACK INTO THE BODY. MAYBE YOUR DR. WILL KNOW SOMETHING DIFFERENT.

Ladies,

I know this is an extremely important issue for you.  I'm sory you have to deal with this.

Susan Anderson has had pd for 21* years.  She had 2 children after her dx.    They are now 19 and 17 years old.  I don't know the details her medical experience, but I'm sure she would be happy to discuss it with you.  I will have her post here in the am.  Ron

tracy,

MY NAME IS SUSAN  ANDERSON RON TOLD ME ABOUT YOUR MSG.  I DON'T HOW MUCH HELP I WILL BE BUT I WILL GIVE IT A TRY. I WAS TWENTY-FIVE  WHEN I GOT PD AND I DID BECOME PREGNANT WITH MY FIRST DAUGHTER,SHE IS NOW 19AND THEN ABOUT A YEAR AFTER I HAD HER THE DOCTOR TOLD ME IF I WANTED TO HAVE A 2ND ONE WE HAD BETTER GET PREGNANT.  SO WE DECIDED TO AND WE HAD #2 SHE IS NOW 16.

WITH BOTH THESE PREGNANICES I WENT OFF ALL MED'S, I DID NOT WANT TO HURT MY BABIES .  BACK THEN IT WAS UNHEARD OF FOR A PERSON 25TO HAVE PD PLUS TO BE PREGNANT .....WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN YOU IMAGINE.  THEY COULD NOT SITE ANY STUDIES THAT HAVE BEEN DONE ON THE SUBJECT, SO THEY COULD NOT TELL ME WHETHER IT WOULD HURT THE BABIES.  MY SYMPTOMS WERE MILD ALSO BUT THE STRAIN OF THE 2ND ONE CAUSED IT TO GET WORSE.

ONE INTERESTING THING I DO KNOW IS THAT WHEN I WAS HAVING THE BABIES THE PAIN MED. THEY GAVE ME TOTALLY TOOK AWAY MY SYMPTOMS FOR A COUPLE OF HOURS. (THE EPIDURAL)  tHEY COULD NOT EXPLAIN WHY.

SO ALL I CAN SAY IS TRACY IS TRUST IN YOUR HEART TO GUIDE YOU, BUT I WOULD GO OFF ALL MEDS.YOU JUST NEVER KNOW WHAT THESE DRUGS WILL DO A BABY.  IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS YOU CAN MAIL ME DIRECT AT MAIL4SUE@MSN.COM.

I AM SORRY I COULD NOT BE OF MORE HELP.
I WOULD BE INTERESTED TO KNOW WHAT DECIDE.
THANK YOU.

SUSAN ANDERSON

Tracy--
This is a tough decision to make...I had been dxd one year b4 getting pregnant.  Both my neuro and OB/GYN recommended going of meds 3 mos prior to conception.  During the entire pregnancy, all of my PD symptoms went away.  I, like Sue, were an exrremely rare breed.

I continue to follow research on this topic as it is very important to YOPD patients.  Levodopa (sinemet) does not appear to be harmful.  However dopamine agonists (requip, mirapex) should NOT be used during pregnancy.

My neuro said something that echoes in my mind:  "The pregnancy and child should be OK, but I am more concerned about your ability to be a mom as you raise & care for this child."  Little did I know he would be autistic...so my research continues!

Dr. Larry Golbe, at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital has done research extensively on PD and Pregnancy.  Unfortunately,, the info is 9 uears old.  E mai; me if you have other questions!

A few years ago I read a medical article on pregnancy and Parkinsons. From what I remember women felt significantly better during pregnancy and profited from  a benign effect.
A summary of this article was published in PARKINSON UPDATE  I might still have a copy of it.
I will go through my sediments and hope I'll be able to find it.
I myself got diagnosed with PD at 26 and never had the courage to have a baby. So it made quite an impression on me when I read about this study.
Take care, you will hear from me again soon.

Hello,

This info is based on personal experience.

DX at 27 years old,in 1986
29 1988- pregnant
30 1989- baby born-Tiffany
30 1989- pregnant
31 1990- baby born-Vanessa

I have two beautiful daughters that I delivered two years after dx with pd. First baby natural birth at full gestation, she is now a healthy 16 year old teen. Second born at 6th month of gestation: weight 2 lbs 10 oz prematured baby, Although doc doubts (I never lost faith) she is a honor roll high school student, normal, healthy 15 year old teen.
For every pregnancy-1st three months of gestation I volunteer to stop taking all pd medications for precaution. 17 years ago was very hard to imagine PD and pregnancy.
